Lake County Connection is Lake County's shared ride, door-to-door, paratransit service for people whose disability or transportation disadvantaged status prevents them from using LakeXpress. Those who feel they may need this service can read eligibility requirements and learn how to apply.

The Lake County Transportation Disadvantaged Program was established for individuals who do not have access to any other means of transportation, including public bus service (LakeXpress), because of age, disability or income. It is also provided to those who do not receive services from a sponsoring agency. A "sponsoring agency" is an agency that pays for transportation services for their clients, such as Medicaid. Transportation Disadvantaged services are provided primarily for senior citizens and at-risk children who are mobility and developmentally impaired.

Program History

Florida's transportation disadvantaged program was created in 1979 and reenacted in 1989. The 1989 act created the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged and enhanced local participation in the planning and delivery of coordinated transportation services through community transportation coordinators (CTC).

On Jan. 1, 2001, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners became the County's CTC. The Board contracted with LifeStream for the management and provision of transportation disadvantaged service in Lake County, which LifeStream provided under the operation of "Lake County Transit." On Nov. 7, 2003, the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged extended Lake County's CTC designation until Oct. 30, 2009.

On October 1, 2013, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners entered into an agreement with Ride Right Transit, LLC. to be the County's paratransit provider. Ride Right provides this service under Lake County Connection.

On March 6, 2017, Lake County entered into an agreement with McDonald Transit, a division of RATP Dev, to operate the county's public transit services. The Board of County Commissioners chose McDonald Transit through a national competitive process, with contract services for an initial three-year period.
