The national effort is designed to encourage people to get out of their cars and ride public transportation to raise awareness of the financial benefits of transit. Public transportation has the ability to save people money, conserve gasoline and reduce the harmful greenhouse gases emitted into the environment.
“We encourage everyone to use Lake County’s public transportation service LakeXpress on June 18 and to also carpool, vanpool, bicycle or walk,” said Ken Harley, Director of the Lake County Public Transportation Division.
LakeXpress operates Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. The bus service operates three routes: The Villages to Eustis and circulators in downtown Leesburg and Mount Dora. A fourth route from Umatilla to Zellwood will begin July 1. Fares for LakeXpress are $1 for all trips. Half-fares are available for riders 60 years or older, students and individuals with disabilities (buses are equipped with lifts). Students are currently being offered free rides during the summer until Aug. 31. Free fares are available for children under five years of age, who are accompanied by a fare-paying chaperone.
